What is The Dog Star?
I was both excited and saddened when I closed my
Yoga Studio last May 1997. Saying goodbye to Down
Dog Yoga was difficult. I love teaching Yoga and
couldnt bear losing the Theme of the
Dog. This loyal character had been
with me for over 2 years and provided a base of
understanding for Yoga. As some of you know, Downward
Facing Dog is a primary Yoga Posture. A well
executed Dog Pose can put a smile on the face of
even the most beginning student. Besides that, some
of you may have met my dog, Barney, and know
how much I love and adore this furry creature. So.....
In the heart and heat of the summer, I had an epiphany!
(an epiphany is: a sudden manifestation of
the essence or meaning of something). I remembered
there was a Dog Star! I jumped
out of my chair and ran to my study to look through
my astronomy books. To my great delight I found
this information on the dog constellations. CANIS
MAJOR AND MINOR.
Two constellations, each of
which has a major star!!Sirius is called the Dog
Star because it is the main star in the constellation
of the Greater Dog, which follows at the
heels of Orion in his journey across the skies.
The constellation gave the name of dog-days
to the hot and trying period of the summer,
including most of July and the first half of August.
During this time Sirius rises just after the sun,
and follows it over the heavens each day. The ancients
perceived the star to be in some way responsible
for the malign heat of the midsummer sun and was
thought to exert an evil influence on the health
of those exposed to its burning rays. Even now we
frequently hear that dogs are likely to go
mad at this season because the Dog Star
is in the ascendant. Indeed, the name Sirius
comes directly from a Greek word signifiying sparkling
or scorching.Sirius is by far the brightest
star in the heavens and situated so it can be
seen in all southern latitudes and in all northern
latitudes south of Greenland.
The other Dog Star, Procyon, lies in the constellation
of the Little Dog (Canis Minor). The name
Procyon means before the dog.
It received its name because it appears in the east
before the Great Dog Star. It is, in fact, a most
beautiful star, and is the sixth in order of brightness
among the stars seen in our latitude. It is very
distinctly individual, being the only one among
the beautiful group of winter stars that is lightly
tinged with yellow.
As you look over The Dog Star you will
notice that there is s a Yoga Corner. I still
teach privately with a few small classes. I have
a waiting list for these classes, but if you are
interested in being put on the list, give me a call.
I hope that your New Year brings you peace love
and prosperity.

Astrology
Readings with Amber

|
|
What
is an astrological reading? My first astrological
reading was many years ago. I really had no idea
what to expect. Being dedicated to self-knowledge,
I figured it wouldnt hurt to hear what someone
had to say about my life. I was fascinated!
A chart is a blueprint of your souls path
here in this lifetime. It is information based on
the relative posititons of the planets to you. It
is derived from the date, the time and the place
where you were born. It helps you to see that you
have certain qualities, not intrinsically good or
bad, that you may use either way. Its how you use
them that makes them good or bad. No sign, or planet,
or birth chart is either good or bad. They can be
used effectively, or ineffectively; favorably, or
unfavorably. The reading is to help you avoid or
eliminate the negativities, and to make use of,
and emphasize a positivie directions.
When you were born correlates
with what you are. What causes
the correlation. We dont know. Perhaps our
connection to nature and the universe. Consequently,
it wont interfere with any beliefs,
religious or otherwise, that you may have with causation.
Through the reading we find out more about our qualities.
With no two charts being exactly the same
(twins are similiar), it adds up to a study of individual
uniqueness, unique capabilities, unique problems,
and unique patterns of growth. Also we find
that the constantly moving planets get into new
positions, correlating with pressure that we feel
at certain preictable times. How will we react?
Thats our choice. The information doesnt limit
you, saying you are fated to
be such and such a way. Instead it helps you to
cope, to deal more realistically and effectively
with your situation, whatever it may be.
Are pressures eliminated? No, but their power is.
How? Your reaction to the pressures is changed.
David Starr Jordan once said, Our purpose
in life is not to make life easier but to make men
stronger.
If you are interested in a reading, call and leave
your address and phone number. I will send you a
packet of the astrological services that I offer.
I look forward to working with you! |

Signs of the Upcoming
Month
Capricorn & Aquarius

|
December
21 thru January 20
Capricorn is the sign of the Goat. The Mountain
goat or the Sea goat. It is associated with the
quality of cardinality or leadership. It
is an Earth sign.
It is the function of Earth to contain, organize
and give form. The nature of earth restricts, holds,
and provides a means for control. Capricorns help
to support this valuable function as an Éarth
sign in the zodiac.
They are often described as responsible, dependable,
conservative, realistic, cautious and hard-working.
They can also be sure-footed.
The shadow of the above descriptions can lead to
begrudging, depressed, judgmental, materialistic
and greedy. Thus resulting in inhibited and crystallized
behavior.
The ruling planet for Capricorn is Saturn.
The ancients thought of Saturn as a dark and tough
planet. As man has become more conscious, the principles
associated with Saturn have changed. Saturn is currently
associated with lessons, tests and karma.
Carl Payne Tobey in his Correspondence Course explains
that Saturn is associated with habits. Sometimes
when an individual is going through a Saturn transit
they find themselves looking at their outworn and
old habits. Even some of the best habits can certainly
become outworn in time. They may become less useful
and perhaps dark in nature.
It is curious that this sign comes at the
beginning of the year when people find themselves
tightening their belts and setting goals and developing
new habits. |

Aquarius

|
January
20 thru February 18
Aquarius is the sign of the Water Bearer.
It is has the quality of fixed or stable energy.
It is an Air sign. The nature of air is detached,
connecting, refined, light, and alert. The Aquarian
is an abstractionist. He sees things not
as they were, not as they are, but as they will
be. He unconsciously senses the trends ahead.
And, very unlike Capricorn the words associated
with the Aquarian are; inventive, spontaneous, unconventional,
different, revolutionary, liberal, open-minded and
unpredictable.
The symbol is of a man pouring water from an urn.
It is possible that this symbol was intended to
portray the separation of the abstract from the
material. It could also have represented the
soul leaving the material body.
Unlike Capricorn, Aquarius is not conservative.
He is radical. He thinks ahead. The keyword for
Aquarius is change. He is of the future.
Everything an Aquarian succeeds in he is thought
of as crazy until he does it. You see, he
deals with the breaking of habits, the letting go
of the outworn and old.
The planet ruling Aquarius is Uranus. Uranus
represents the creative, innovative, freedom-seeking
parts of the psyche. Thus, its placement in the
natal chart shows how a person expresses creative
genius. The house position of Uranus shows
us the area of life where one can express originality
as well as sudden, and dramatic change. |

Astrological Cycle Update
January & February~ 1998
|
Cycles
are a major part of understanding astrology. I highly
suggest that you purchase an Astrological calender
to begin understanding the following cycles. Although
it is not necessary it can help immensely.
Moon Wobble
A Moon Wobble is a cycle that reflects chaos,
upheavals and catastrophies. It is a cycle that
was discovered by Carl Payne Tobey. His research
revealed that disasters occured in correspondence
to the North and South Lunar Nodes and the Sun.
A Moon Wobble occurs when the transiting
Sun comes into aspect with the Lunar Nodes. This
contact occurs when the Sun and either the
North or South Lunar Node are in the same sign,
called a conjunction or, when the Sun is
90 degrees or square to the North or South
Lunar Node. The effects of the Wobble depend
on the sign it occurs in and the relationship
of the planets. Generally it is a period of emotional
instability. The best way to respond to the
Moon Wobble is not to react to any drama. Generally
things arent as they seem to be during this
time. It is a time for inner reflection and mediation.
If you want more information on the Moon Wobbles
send a SASE and I will send you a sheet explaining
them. The next Moon Wobble occurs Feb. 2th-March
14, 1998 at 10 degrees Pieces.
Moon Void of Course
As the Moon orbits the Earth it passes through all
twelve signs of the zodiac. This takes about 2 1/2
days. When the Moon gets near the end of each sign
and goes beyond its last connection or aspect with
another planet, and until it moves into the
next sign, the Moon is said to be Void of
Course. This period is a time when we can
really feel unconnected and without direction. It
is therefore, an ideal time for centering yourself.
The void can last anywhere from seconds to minutes
to days. It is wise to avoid making important decisions.
Relax, and if you cannot relax, clean out a file
or a closet. |

Featured Pose
of the Month
Virabhadrasana One
The Warrior
When I started Yoga many years ago I realized
that it would become a path that would transform
my entire life. I didnt consciously know
this. It was deep. (Probably why I never
quit). After 18 years I still feel like a beginner.
Especially in this pose. Virabhadrasana
One.
There are 3 variations of Warrior Pose in Yoga.
In this pose the chest is fully expanded.
This helps the body to breath deeply. It
also helps to relieve stiffness in the
shoulders and the back and puts attention on the
ankles and knees. When the shoulders are dropped,
this pose helps cure stiffness of the neck. What
I love about it the most, is that it helps open
the hip joint.
I have watched many students have the hardest
time with this pose. Mainly with the back leg.
Watch that you do not collapse the back
inner ankle. This will put weight on the back
knee. Keep the arch of the foot lifted. The back
leg is a primary part of the pose. Connect with
the earth in your back leg first, before
bending the front knee over the toes. Then hangout
and breathe for a while. Archetypically the Warrior
is about Showing up. Getting there. Arriving.
Being present. Another word I associate with
a Warrior is Engaging.
This pose will be difficult to execute immediately.
In fact most yoga postures take time to
really understand. This one continues to
be a challenge for me, but, showing up
and being present and engaging
are also work I have to do. The ancients knew
that life was a balance of the inner path
and the outer path. The outer path is the physical
action of the pose, (much like a warrior picking
up a sword). The inner path pertains to the consequences
or results upon using or not using the sword.
Presence always has the element of responsibility.
To exercise the spirit of the warrior there is
always a choice. That is Yoga!!
