Wisdom Teaching #20

May 6, 2002

Greetings! I apologize on my teachings being “missing” from your mailbox in the past two weeks. My 15 year-old dog, Barney, passed away April 16th. Barney was a friend, but most of all a family member. We will miss him. If you would like to see a picture of him go to: http://www.amberflynn.com/barney.html

This weeks teaching is on the Seven Days of the Week. The following is a very brief and fun outline of a very extensive topic. The "week" was adopted in Rome about 400 AD but its origin is ancient. Each day of the week is associated with one of our seven visible planets in the sky. I have also included some of the related Gods and Goddesses as well.

  • Sunday is related to our planet the Sun.
Sunday was derived from Dies Solis (day of the sun) in Latin. Sunday celebrates the sun god, Ra, Helios, Apollo, Ogmios, Mithrias, and the sun goddess, Phoebe.
  • Monday is related to our planet the Moon.
Monday was derived from Lunae Dies, (day of the moon) in Latin. Monday celebrates the goddess, Selene, Luna and Mani.
  • Tuesday is related to our planet Mars.
Tuesday was derived from Dies Martis, (day of mars) in Latin. Tuesday celebrates the Roman God Tiw. Tiw,Tyr, or Tir, who was the honorable god of war. Aries was also the Roman god of war.
  • Wednesday is related to our planet Mercury.
Wednesday was derived from Dies Mercurii, (day of mercury) in Latin. The name derives from the Scandinavian Woden (Odin), chief god of Norse mythology, often called the All Father. Also related to the God Hermes, who was the messenger of the Gods.
  • Thursday is related to our planet Jupiter.
Thursday was derived from Dies Jovis, (day of Jupiter) in Latin. The name is derived from the Middle English "Thoresday", or Jovesday. Thor was the god of strength and thunder. He was the defender and helper in war. He was the son of Odin, and the counterpart of Jupiter or Jove.
  • Friday is related to our planet Venus.
Friday was derived from Dies Veneris (day of Venus) in Latin. Venus is the goddess of love. The name is derived from the Germanic Frigga the name of the Norse god Odin's wife. Frigga is considered to be the mother of all. She is the goddess who presides over marriage.
  • Saturday is related to our planet Saturn.
Saturday was derived from Dies Saturni, (day of Saturn) in Latin. Saturn was the Roman god of agriculture and Saturday is also represented by Loki, the Norse god of tricks and chaos.
"Poem of The Week"

Monday’s child is fair of face,
Tuesday’s child is full of grace,
Wednesday’s child is full of woe,
Thursday’s child has far to go,
Friday’s child is loving and giving,
Saturday’s child works hard for a living,
But the child that works hard on the Sabbath Day,
Is blithe and bonny, good and gay.
