“Zooming In” on the Healing Power of Weekly Music Lessons

“If you ever think about giving up,

Remember why you held on for so long.”

~Hayley Williams

This past month, with the onset of the Coronavirus, many schools transitioned from teaching music lessons at their music schools to teaching “Online Zoom Lessons” for students.  They jumped in and rallied. Within a week, teachers were online and ready to go!

Gosh…. we have learned a lot!  Mostly, we have learned that it is vital, for many reasons, to continue to receive music lessons every week.

The feedback about online lessons has been phenomenal.  Many teachers received an overwhelming amount of appreciation from their clients about the value of weekly music lessons. The need for music as a form of essential healing has become quite apparent.

As we “zoomed” in (yes, pun intended) with this new form of music education, we learned that regardless of how the lessons are taught, in-person or online, music is of vital importance in everyone’s lives.

We started a FREE Pop-Up music class every day at 1:30 pm (it is extremely popular.) The students who show up daily are immensely grateful and completely engaged.

For example… we received this from one of our new students to his teacher:

“Dear Jonathan, Thanks for teaching me guitar.  I wish I could see you in real life. And I really like you.  Have a good weekend.  Love, Simon.

Many students report that, while it was a challenge, they now look forward to their lessons more than ever, and it continues to be the “light in their day.”

From another parent thrilled with their lessons:

“I wanted to write to let you know how highly we think of our piano teacher.  He is unfailingly patient and kind, and our daughter is thriving under his guidance. She played a couple of verses of Ode to Joy (imperfectly, but completely spontaneously “by ear” but using her newfound knowledge of the chords) last week and continued to play it on and off for fun. We are stoked at her progress, obviously, because no one in our family plays any musical instrument. Thank you for your teachers!”

The owner had blue bracelets made, inscribed with  “Hope” imprinted on them, and sent them out to all current students.

Another parent recently posted on Facebook:

A big thanks for getting my kids (and me) through this shut-in time.  You have given my children weeks of fun, worthwhile voice, and piano lessons. They sent us these snazzy blue bracelets saying “HOPE.” I can’t love enough about this!

Yes, we are “tooting” our own horn (we are musicians, after all), and we also want to add that we never, ever, gave up!  So don’t give up on your business, your love for your work, and serving the community.  The rewards are immense, and the healing journey, incredible!
